Online ammo shipping restrictions by state
Read this before you order
Ammunition is not like most online purchases. Several states restrict, gate, or effectively ban shipping ammo straight to a resident's door, and the rules change often. The states that commonly require extra steps (a license or permit, an in-state licensed vendor for pickup, or a background check) or block direct-to-door shipping include California, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C., with some cities (for example New York City and Chicago) adding their own rules. A few retailers also won't ship to Alaska or Hawaii for logistics reasons.
Most retailers' checkout will block or flag a restricted shipping address, but the responsibility is yours: verify your state's current law and the retailer's shipping policy before you order. Nothing here is legal advice.
Buying smart: cost per round
The cheapest box isn't always the cheapest ammo
A $10 box of 50 is $0.20 per round; a $230 case of 1000 is $0.23 per round, so the small box can actually be the better deal. Every listing here shows the cost per round, and you can sort any caliber by it (low to high) to surface the best deal regardless of box or case size. Bulk cases usually win on price per round, if you have the cash up front and somewhere cool and dry to store them.
